A Happy Dilemma

When we moved into this house, we undertook a major renovation. We knocked down walls, completely gutted the kitchen and bathrooms, pulled up carpet...you get the picture. We even planned for a (gasp) baby's room. We chose the smaller of the two guest bedrooms to eventually house "baby central". Nick diligently put up the bead board and trim to complement the perfect shade of green (of course which could go for a boy or girl depending on the accessories). But the baby's room never got a baby. I tried to convince myself that "it will happen as soon as things calm down after the renovation. God doesn't want me to be pregnant and have to live in all of this mess." But, the renovation came and went and still no baby.

Enter our first fertility specialist and not too long after our first pregnancy. We were beyond excited. Our baby's room would finally be put to good use. While out and about shopping I would find myself looking at baby stuff. I even purchased 3 little onesies that said "My Daddy Rocks." You see...Nick's brother's wives were pregnant at the time and how cute would it have been to have seen all of the brother's kids wearing the same rock-star onesies. Two days later I miscarried. Needless to say, the shirts were returned to the store and the day dreaming about which color (pink or blue) would be coordinating in the baby's room stopped.

But fast forward...here were are...finally pregnant (with twins) and completely happy and overjoyed. Life couldn't get any better (except for when the little ones get here in April/May).

But we have a dilemma...a happy dilemma...but a dilemma.

Our "baby's room" we so lovingly created will not hold two babies. Just too little. We plan to put them in the back bedroom which is larger...two cribs...no problem. So here is the "dilemma" we are facing...

How in the world to you decorate a nursery for a boy and a girl?

(Nick would say girl and a boy...he is already so protective of his little girl...it's cute and annoying at the same time.)

I go back and forth about it every day. We are planners and want all of the details set and ready to go. My sister commented...it's gonna be here before you know it. Nah...all the time in the world. But wait...how is it that I am already 16 weeks? Aughhhh.....freak out moment. They will be here before we know it! And I have no clue what I want to do with their room!

So you see...a happy dilemma.

How do you make a decision?

I love this dilemma. I would get it done ASAP, girl!

If I could do it all over again, I would do a fun color combination-aqua and red would be my choice if I could do it all over again. [A little like this, http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2009/11/adorable-aqua-and-red-nursery.html ] Fun, playful fabrics that aren't too baby-ish [the infancy stage will feel like an eternity while you're in it, but it goes by fast], so you can change accessories as their interests change in toddlerhood.

And while you're at it, get this mobile. SO CUTE! Where was this when I was planning the boys' room?

I'd also get curtains that totally block light, too. And lots of storage containers for toys [to be dumped over and over later].

There. My 2 cents. Have fun!

Hi! My good friend had boy/girl twins and had them originally in the same crib. When they were a few months old, she had to move them to separate rooms because they woke each other up and it was easier to soothe each one separately. Just an idea... I don't know if you want to sacrifice 2 rooms ;-)

I'd look for a line of bedding that comes in a boy and a girl version. Then you can have the fun of gender-specific but the pattern still goes together. I apologize to whichever one of my blog friends who previously found these patterns and is considering them for their twins, but I thought this was a cute idea: blue turtles: http://www5.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6E.aspx?DeptID=62438&CatID=62728&GrpTyp=ENS&ItemID=1398fcd&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CMID=external|62644|62645&Fltr=&Srt=&QL=F&IND=15&cmVirtualCat=&CmCatId=external|62644|62645|62728 and pink ladybugs: http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6E.aspx?DeptID=62438&CatID=62729&GrpTyp=ENS&ItemID=15d0f64&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CMID=external|62644|62645&Fltr=&Srt=&QL=F&IND=24&cmVirtualCat=&CmCatId=external|62644|62645|62729

Or there is a boy and girl version of the elephant bedding we are going to use (yes, I'm biases toward it!) http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6E.aspx?DeptID=62438&CatID=62729&GrpTyp=ENS&ItemID=153ca27&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CMID=external|62644|62645&Fltr=&Srt=&QL=F&IND=11&cmVirtualCat=&CmCatId=external|62644|62645|62729

Ok, that's enough for now! Good luck!

I would do fun colors like lime green, aqua, purples...but...I don't know. We're pink all the way :) It will be precious no matter what :)

Congratulations on a boy and a girl! I wish I had done more in the begining because now I can't and I still don't have a finished nursery. I've given up on the idea of a "perfect" nursery for healthy babies. BUT, my plan was to decorate around a child painting of mine (a pond scene with frogs, bears, etc.). I'm just using gender neutral colors (yellow, red, green) and no pink! But I'm not a big pink fan anyhow.

There are so many good ideas on here already. A good friend of mine recently had a baby without finding out what he/she (ended up being a boy) was going to be and she did a "jungle" theme. She got lots of gender neutral stuff at showers and that is kind of nice because if the next baby is a girl, she won't need all new stuff. I like the idea of gender neutral, or a theme, like Winnie the Pooh or some other theme that could be for both, or picking a girl set and boy set made by the same manufacturer that coordinate. I bet that lots of companies make those these days! Have fun!

I still think you you go with the baby gap stuff I showed you. I know it's a bit on the expensive side but you can just register for it. Speaking of which, we should probably have your babies shower a lot earlier than you normally would. Who knows if/when you were to be placed on bed rest. Good thing you have a wonderful sister like me to help you!

Here are a couple ideas...

Go with a neutral color, like a pale green or yellow. It would work for a boy or a girl until they are old enough to have their own rooms.

Another idea I always thought would be neat is to paint two of the walls one color, like a lavender color and then the other two walls blue. You could arrange the room to coordinate - boy goes with blue and girl stuff goes with purple.

You could always just do a twin theme room - use colors or a mural on the wall to signify twins...it would be fun.

I'll keep thinking for ya! Good luck!

Let me know when you need me to come down to do some decorating. I'm good at painting, refinishing furniture.

Also, I'm passing along a blog award your way. Check it out here: http://thebaldwinadventures.blogspot.com/2009/12/my-first-blog-award.html
